Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, July 27, unveiled a commemorative coin in honour of the great Chola emperor Rajendra Chola I at a grand event in Gangaikondacholapuram, Ariyalur district, Tamil Nadu.

During the ceremony, he also announced the installation of statues of Rajaraja Chola and Rajendra Chola to celebrate their remarkable legacy.

The event coincided with the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival, a culturally significant occasion in Tamil Nadu. It also marked the remembrance of Rajendra Chola’s historic maritime expedition to Southeast Asia, showcasing India’s ancient naval prowess.

The event underscored the government’s dedication to preserving India’s rich cultural heritage and honoring the architectural legacy of the Chola dynasty. Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Trichy on Saturday for a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu.

The commemorative ceremony at Gangaikondacholapuram saw the presence of several dignitaries, including Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi and Union Minister L Murugan.

Key state ministers such as Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister P K Sekar Babu, and Transport Minister SS Sivasankar also attended the event.

Their participation highlighted the significance of the occasion and the joint efforts to honour the Chola dynasty’s enduring legacy.

Modi Hails Chola Legacy as Foundation of Democratic Traditions

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the Chola dynasty as one of the golden ages of Indian history. He linked their legacy to his government’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat,’ calling Rajaraja and Rajendra symbols of India’s rich heritage.

Modi highlighted that the Cholas laid early foundations of democratic traditions through election-based governance. He remarked, “People talk about the Magna Carta, but centuries before that, the Chola rule had people’s representation.” The statement underscored India’s long-standing civilisational values.

PM Highlights Operation Sindoor as Symbol of Strong National Security

Prime Minister Modi also spoke about Operation Sindoor, emphasizing India’s firm stance on national security. He stated, “Today’s India places its security first,” referring to the precision strikes conducted in May 2025. The operation targeted terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir in response to the Pahalgam attack.

Modi highlighted that the world has witnessed India’s ability to act decisively against threats. His remarks reinforced the message of a confident and assertive India on the global stage.

Gangaikondacholapuram was founded by Rajendra Chola following his victorious campaigns in the Ganga basin, symbolizing the height of Chola power and vision. The site became home to the majestic Brihadisvara temple and the man-made Cholagangam lake, reflecting the dynasty’s architectural and engineering brilliance.

At Sunday’s ceremony, the cultural significance of the event was elevated by a soulful performance from music maestro Ilaiyaraaja. PM Modi recites Thiruvasagam hymns by saint-poet Manikkavasagar during temple ceremony. The performance paid tribute to Tamil heritage and spiritual tradition.

PM Modi lands on dry bed of Chola-era Cholagangam lake, showcasing ancient engineering marvel. From there, he held a vibrant roadshow on his way to the iconic Brihadisvara temple, warmly greeted by cheering crowds along the route.

After attending the commemorative event, Modi visited the temple site, paying tribute to the Chola dynasty’s legacy. Following the proceedings, he departed for New Delhi on a special aircraft from Tiruchi airport, concluding his two-day visit to Tamil Nadu.
